What is Console Classix?
The concept of Console Classix is to provide our customers with
the opportunity to once again play the games they loved when they
were younger. We can take you back to a time when things were
simpler: a time when two buttons were all you needed. If you love
these games like we do, you wish there was an easy way to play the
games you loved, and the games you always wanted to play but never
got the chance. Our solution is simple: We will let you borrow our
games, just like your neighbor down the street used to do. The
difference is that we own a lot of games: over 200 titles, and
multiple copies of many. So you and your neighbor can both borrow
the same game and play at the same time, as long as we have two
copies free at the time.
Is there a monthly
fee? How much?
When you sign up for Console Classix, there is no fee. You are
allowed to play on the NES client and it's netplay capabilities
absolutely free for life! What will cost money is the other more
advanced clients, for systems such as the Super Nintendo, which will
feature the same options available for the NES and more. You also
get many options not allowed to players on free accounts. The
monthly fee for all systems including the NES, is $5.00 USD per
month.
Will I
get hidden charges in my phone bill?
No, there are no hidden fees at all. The NES service is now
and will remain free. All "for pay" systems are covered under one monthly
fee. You can signup for the "for pay" system when you signup or anytime
after by going to the customers section of the site. You can cancel your
service there as well. All transactions go through Paypal and there are
no hidden fees.
How is this legal?
The case of SONY V. CONNECTIX
found that unauthorized emulation is perfectly legal. It was the
decision of the court that CONNECTIX had the right to emulate the
SONY Playstation and that reverse engineering of the Playstation
BIOS for such a cause fell under fair usage. As a result of this
case CONNECTIX was allowed to release it's Virtual Gaming Station
for the Mac OS. For more information about our legal status, see the
Legal Section of our web site.
What if NOA (IDSA)
found you?
On June 21, 2001 Nintendo Of America (NOA) wrote us a letter
concerning the legal status of our service. They informed us that it
was the feeling of NOA that we were participating in pirate
activity. We assured them that we were not involved in any such
activity. Since that time we have received no further contact from
NOA. You can read the NOA Letter and the Console Classix Reply here.

What
happens when my account balance runs out?
Console Classix will simply change your account to a free
account, in which you can only access the NES games and netplay
functions. We will only take money from your account, which you can
independently add money into yourself.
Why don't I just
go download a ROM?
There are many users who would rather download an illegal ROM
image and play it on their computer for free. Console Classix does
not encourage illegal emulation in any way, and you are free to do
so at your own risk, but it is illegal. Console Classix also offers
many benefits you will not find from illegal emulation, such as:
Server side save states (Load your save game form anywhere in the
world), access to hundreds of games all in one download screen,
netplay capabilities, and many more!
Why
are you taking donations if you're charging money?
Our recent popularity has lead to financial strain on the
company. We are simply growing faster than we can afford. The plain
and simple truth is that we need help. We need more games for the
NES section of the site and we've had to upgrade our server. At the
rate that we are growing we will need to completely replace the
server soon. This means we need money and games. We're not asking
you to simply give us what we need with no reimbursement. All
donations will be tracked and when our "for pay" systems
like the SNES come online all donors will be reimbursed with credit
for service. If you donate games then we will credit you with a
variable amount of service depending on what system it's for. Think
of it more as paying in advance than making a donation. I also want
to assure you all that these donations are going to go directly
toward keeping the free section of the site up. All donations,
with the exception of games for other systems, will only be used to
add new server equipment and new NES games. Thank you all for your
help!
What
systems can I expect in the future?
We are working as fast we can to get many systems up for play. As
of now, Console Classix ultimate goal is to allow our users to play
every classic system (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.). At our rate of
development we need to work on one of to things with our budget:
Bringing out new systems, and buying new games for current systems.
Yes, we could have a new system practically every month, but the
fact is that we cannot afford to buy enough games for each system
every month for each one. If you would like to suggest a game to us,
visit our forums.
What about playing
online?
Definitely one of our most popular questions is concerning online
play. We now have a feature that allows two users to play online
with eachother provided you have your own host and guest, which you
would have to arrange yourself. We are working on a new system which
will allow users to play online with other users in a network style
client (See Battle.net Copyright
Blizzard Inc.).
Is
there an alternative to paying for the advanced clients?
There are currently several ways in which you can bypass our
paying option for the Client: You can donate games to us! For every
SNES game or every 2 NES games you donate we will give you a month
of free service (non cash refundable). Contact Aaron Ethridge about donating
games from other systems as well as rare or more valuable games.
For donation info see the Donation
section.
What
about donating games that don't work?
Do you have a game or collection of games that no longer work?
Send them into us! While your system may not be able to read them,
the ROM image may very well still be intact, in which we will accept
donations of broken games just like that of working games. So send
us all your broken games and get free Console Classix service! For
donation info see the Donation
section.
